Matthew Kessler
Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics

Dr. Matt Kessler is an applied linguist, whose research centers on issues related
to computer-assisted language learning, second language writing, and genre-based teaching
and learning.
Matt is the author of multiple books, including Technology in the language classroom: What every new ESL teacher needs to know (2026, University of Michigan Press), and Digital multimodal composing: Connecting theory, research and practice in second language
acquisition (2024, Multilingual Matters). He is also the co-author of Making the most of graduate school: A practical guidebook for students in applied
linguistics, education, and TESOL (2024, available open access through Applied Linguistics Press). Matt's research has
appeared in numerous academic journals, such as Applied Linguistics, Computer Assisted Language Learning, ELT Journal, Journal of
Second Language Writing, and Language Teaching, among others.
At USF, Matt serves as a core faculty member for the MA Applied Linguistics program
and the PhD program in Linguistics and Applied Language Studies. In addition to advising
PhD students, he regularly teaches the courses Computer Assisted Language Learning
(LIN 6932) and Second Language Acquisition (LIN 6720), among others. He also serves as the co-lead of the Digital Discourse, Media, and Writing Lab.
Matt received his PhD in Second Language Studies from Michigan State University, and
his MA in Linguistics from Ohio University.
